After 25 years, canal dredging set for completion
DNREC officials said this week that the Assawoman Canal dredging project is
“closing in on completion.” An extension has been granted for work to continue
through May 28, and if dredging is not complete by that date, DNREC has requested
additional time to get the project finished this season, said Ariane Nichols
of DNREC’s Division of Soil and Water Conservation.

ASSAWOMAN
CANAL - Personal observation: Dredging continues.
The present location of the dradge is near the end of Holly Ct. I am
unofficially informed that they have permission to continue dredging through May.
At the present rate of advance, this should be enough.

Delaware waterways: Dredging of Assawoman Canal extended
The overdue dredging of the Assawoman Canal will continue for at least three
more months, as crews scramble at what seems like a snail's pace to finish the
last piece of work.
With less than three-quarters of a mile to go, state
workers have received an extension until April 15 to wrap things up, said Chuck
Williams, the dredging project manager with the Department of Natural Resources
and Environmental Control
Dredging has been ongoing this Fall/Winter
in the Assawoman Canal. The dredge is working north in the Canal and
is currently positioned approximately 3000ft north of the Muddy Neck Rd bridge.
The area adjacent to the boat launch at the Muddy Neck Rd bridge is being
used as a staging area for some of our dredging equipment, but the boat launch
does remain open for public use. We have recently received an extension
to our time of year restriction, which will now allow the dredging of the Canal
to continue through April 15th of this year. Our goal is to have the dredging
project completed by this date and therefore before the beginning on the
2010 boating season.
